Year 6 Showcase: Journeying Through "Trash" via Virtual Reality

Our Year 6 students recently captivated parents and staff alike during their latest Showcase, where the gritty world of Andy Mulligan’s novel, Trash, was brought to life through an immersive Virtual Reality experience. The journey began in the homeroom English classroom, where students penned vivid, descriptive narratives to expand upon the book’s setting. These written pieces served as the architectural blueprints for their digital worlds, as students transitioned from traditional storytelling to technical design.

Using Delightex, a powerful 3D creation platform that allows users to build and animate their own virtual environments, students transformed their words into 360-degree realities. This process required meticulous planning, development, and constant refinement. By learning to navigate the Oculus headsets and the nuances of 3D spatial design, students didn't just "play" with technology; they became creators, learning how to transfer abstract ideas into real-world, functional applications.

The VR experience was a highlight of the broader Year 6 Showcase hosted in our Year 6 classrooms. By introducing students to these diverse facets of media production, we are fostering essential 21st-century skills such as critical thinking, spatial awareness, and "technological fluency." In a rapidly shifting landscape where future careers may not even exist yet, these projects prepare our students to be adaptable, creative problem-solvers who can communicate their ideas across any medium.

This successful integration was a true team effort. We owe a huge thank you to the ICT Team, whose technical support ensured a seamless experience for all, and especially our Year 6 Teachers, who dedicated significant time and energy to weaving this technology into their curriculum. Witnessing our students confidently lead their parents through their custom-built worlds showcases impressive attention to detail and burgeoning coding skills. This was indeed a proud moment for our school community. Parents left the showcase thoroughly impressed, seeing firsthand the high-quality, innovative work their children are capable of.
