Year 9 Dive into Robotics with VEX IQ

Year 9 Dive into Robotics with VEX IQ

The British School Manila’s Year 9 students have spent Term 1 immersed in an exciting new Robotics Unit, exploring the fundamentals of engineering, design, and coding. This term marked their introduction to the VEX IQ platform, where they’ve been learning the essentials of building and programming robots.

The unit’s first challenge brought both fun and technical rigour: designing a robot for a “Freeze Tag” game. Students were tasked with building a robot for a specific purpose, ensuring it could move across the game field using a controller. With careful coding, they programmed their robots to respond to the game’s rules—once “tagged,” the robot had to freeze in place and activate an LED light to signal its status.

After testing and refining their builds, students particularly enjoyed making their robots more competitive, adapting their designs and coding so they had a better chance of being the “last man standing” once the challenge began. This balance of creativity, competition, and problem-solving was a highlight of the unit, sparking both excitement and innovation in the classroom.

Looking ahead, Year 9 students are preparing for their next robotics challenge, one that will push their skills even further. This upcoming project will deepen their understanding of the engineering design process, strengthen their coding abilities, and emphasise the importance of teamwork in solving complex problems.

The Robotics Unit not only builds technical skills but also encourages resilience, collaboration, and innovation—qualities that will serve students well far beyond the classroom.

The Technology Team at BSM is here to share info, tips, and tricks on the various platforms that we use in school. We also share information on how to help manage the many platforms your children may use at home, as well as highlight the latest developments in the technological world.
