Brilliant performance of the students in Animal Farm, Activities Week update, and students winning at World Scholar's Cup

Dear families,

I really enjoyed watching some of our students deliver a creative interpretation of Animal Farm this week. Orwell’s work was perhaps never intended for 13- and 14-year-old actors, but they rose to the challenge brilliantly. It was a genuine showcase of the very best of what we aim to do as a school.

For me, the most rewarding aspect was not just the performance itself, but the connections and relationships that grow through being part of a production. The sense of belonging, collaboration, and shared purpose that emerges is profound, and it is something that will stay with those young people long after the final curtain.

In a similar spirit, our Years 7-10's Activities Week continues to take shape. We are now deep into the preparation phase, and as I write, the final site visit is taking place in Malaysia. All four teams are working hard on their next communications for parents, and we will be sending those letters out on Friday, 08 May.

We are also looking forward to spending dedicated time with your children on Thursday, 14 May, helping them prepare for what promises to be an exciting shared adventure. These experiences, much like the production, are about more than the activity itself—they are about building confidence, fostering friendships, and creating lasting memories.

Kind regards,

Mark Attwood

Winning at World Scholar’s Cup

On Friday-Saturday, 24-25 April, seven students from BSM went to the Singapore School in Makati to take part in the World Scholar’s Cup competition. The competition asks teams of three students to take part in Collaborative Essay Writing, Scholar’s Challenge (a 120-question multiple-choice exam) and a Team Debate. There is also a Scholar’s Bowl quiz and a talent show!

Our two teams and one individual participant (she was placed with two team members from another school to make a team of three) excelled themselves, enjoyed themselves and exceeded expectations by winning several gold and silver medals, one crown, one trophy and several golden sashes. As well as being awarded an individual alpaca toy each (the symbol of the competition), we are delighted to announce that each team did well enough to move onto the next Global Round - should they choose to do so. This gives each team the possibility, if they win at Globals, of participating in the final round, the Tournament of Champions, at Yale University, USA.

Under the guidance of Mr Doran, Ms Lin, and Ms O’Sullivan, all the students have had a fantastic opportunity to display their knowledge, preparation work on this year’s themes, teamwork skills and to meet great scholars from other schools in the region. If you want to have a similar opportunity, join the World Scholar’s Cup ASA next year!
