Students faced a dragon battle question with author Andy Darcy Theo! Exciting MAD Week highlights included hands-on experiences

Dear Families,

Which weapon would you take to fight a dragon?

  • An ice sword
  • A double-ended spear
  • A dagger
  • A burning club

This was the question all students from Years 7 to 10 were faced with at the start of their writing workshop today, which was organised by the LRC and English Department. They were joined by Andy Darcy Theo, a published author of the epic YA romantasy series 'Descent Into Darkness'. The purpose of these workshops is to inspire students to appreciate the power of reading and the benefits of imagination. With his marketing background, Andy also pulled back the curtain on what it is to succeed in the competitive publishing industry. With our 5 in 5 reading challenge starting this month, this was a timely workshop.

The time spent with Andy will leave a lasting impression on our students. We are lucky to have a very talented and creative English Department, but visiting specialists such as this elevate education further still, and we will continue to seek great partnerships in the future.

As you know, last week was MAD Week and what a week it was! Students engaged in 13 different experiences, each offering a way to explore advocacy, responsibility, and action.

Highlights included summiting Mount Pulag to learn about the management of unique mountain ecosystems, and seeing up close how altitude shapes biodiversity and livelihoods. Students also conducted hands-on research on the reefs and mangroves of Puerto Galera, contributing to citizen science and restoration work.

Some groups farmed alongside agricultural communities in Lobo’s Jaybanga Rice Terraces and Lagadlarin Mangrove Forest, gaining a grounded view of food systems and coastal protection. Others learned about cultural and tribal traditions through community-led stewardship at Mount Purro.

In the city, students worked with partners in Tondo, experiencing the realities of informal settlements while seeing resilience and community enterprise in action. On campus, our programme focussed on identity, belonging, and sustainable making, with students creating pieces that connected culture to care for people and place.

It was a big, busy, joyful week. Students got their hands dirty, asked great questions, and it was a total delight to watch them come back to campus proud of what they learned and the relationships they built.

This week, the Senior School team has turned their attention towards Activities Week in June. I detailed the trips for Years 7-10 in a previous Lion's Roar. We will be writing to families of those year groups very soon with full details of the trips and signposting an opportunity to come and speak with us about the trips offered to our Senior School students. Year 7 will be at the Quest Camp in Rizal, Year 8 in La Union, Year 9 in Central Malaysia, and Year 10 in Southern Thailand. We are using external providers for all our trips and are very excited about the experiences lined up for your children.

Kind regards,

Mark Attwood
