We are enhancing device policies to support students amid growing social media ban & Register now for TEDxBritishSchoolManila

Good afternoon, families,

I'm sure we have all spent a lot of time thinking about social media use amongst our young people. The enhancements to the device use policy are one further step for us at BSM. The list of countries that are banning social media for children is growing by the week. Whether or not this country makes that step, we will take ever more positive steps to support BSM students.

Contemporary research confirms a sobering reality: human nature has remained unchanged since Milgram’s obedience experiments of the 1960s. Today, the "Screen Shield" provides a digital version of that classic psychological distance; by obscuring the immediate impact of our actions, it emboldens individuals to say and do things online they would never consider in person. At BSM, this underscores the need for ever more proactive education regarding this "screen abstraction." Additionally, we must further support our boys in navigating the fear of humiliation—a powerful motivator that often drives poor decision-making—to ensure their digital actions reflect their true character. We are actively developing our PSHE curriculum and pastoral systems in these areas. I look forward to engaging further with families about social media and device use.

Kind regards,

Mark Attwood
