FOBISIA Maths Competition in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Dear Families,

After the incredible experience of MAD Week, we've also had students showcasing their mathematical talents recently in the FOBISIA competition in Kuala Lumpur. Riley (Year 8), Elise (Year 8), and Archie (Year 7) have kindly shared their recent experience:

"During this year’s recent secondary school FOBISIA, hosted in the Garden International School of Kuala Lumpur, the eight of us—Riley (Year 8), Elise (Year 8), Abhinav (Year 8), Nicholas (Year 8), Akshaj (Year 8), Adam (Year 8), Adhvik (Year 8), and Archie (Year 7)—had the incredible opportunity to represent our school alongside each other. The four-day trip was packed with valuable educational experiences and many bonding opportunities which demonstrated the importance of teamwork and collaboration. However, while there were definitely moments of disagreement and frustration, they were quickly overshadowed by the strong bonds that were formed and numerous moments of fun and laughter.

Not only has this experience taught us meaningful skills of cooperation, it also taught us responsibility when studying and travelling; as well as the confidence and resilience to compete. Furthermore, even though the rounds at Math FOBISIA were full of fun challenges, what we found even more enjoyable were the short but many moments spent together outside of the competition, such as our breakfasts with each other, excursions to the mall, and most unforgettably, the awarding night, when we were all celebrating our combined efforts and individual abilities. This was by far our most memorable incident, winning first place for the poster round; jumping around, hugging each other, even for this small but symbolic win. This truly embodied and showcased the BSM spirit, along with the level of camaraderie and unity among our BSM community.  Archie (Year 7) ‘I found the individual round particularly challenging, while team round 1, the codebreaker round, and the poster round kept us engaged. I was thrilled when our B team won 1st place in the poster round! On the third day, we tackled team round 2, crossnumber round, carousel round, and the difficult dragon maths, which proved to be a challenge for us."
