Fairy Tale reading of Year 9 students to Year 1, Unified Club Special Olympics, and New Staff

Dear Families,

Fairy Tale Friday  - Year 9 Students Read to Year 1

Last Friday, as part of their Fairy Tales unit, the Year 9 students had the opportunity to visit their (much) younger peers in Year 1. After studying some popular examples of the genre and thinking about what textual features would appeal to their audience of five and six-year-olds, the students worked in small groups to plan, write and illustrate their own original children’s stories. The final products featured an eclectic mix of characters including princesses, dragons, talking bears, and pirates!

On the big day, the Year 9s overcame their nerves and confidently shared their narratives with Year 1. Some students chose to enliven their story with props, costumes and quizzes. The Primary School Students were remarkably attentive and well-behaved audience and they had lots of questions about the stories they heard. The morning culminated with the Senior School students memorably acting out a story written by some Year 1 students. The books that were created will now permanently reside in the Year 1 classroom library for students in future years to enjoy.

Unified Club - Special Olympics

Last Sunday, I had the pleasure of joining BSM's Unified Club. Frankie (Year 12), the group's leader, kindly shared the following write-up:

"Last Sunday, BSM’s Unified Club ASA hosted a Volleyball Clinic in partnership with Special Olympics Philippines - an organisation dedicated to providing opportunities to athletes with intellectual disabilities. We invited 40 kids, parents, and coaches to come to school, where we ran engaging drills before coming together to play a friendly match. With even the good weather on our side, the event was filled with laughter, teamwork, and plenty of fun.

The Unified Club takes place every Tuesday (in El Nido, UL9), and in our ASA, we aim to raise awareness for multiple disabilities and advocate for the inclusion of all disabled athletes in sports. We predominantly focus on fundraising, the marketing of infographics, and the clinics that we hold every few months with our collaborators, Special Olympics Philippines."
