Holidays at BSM are vital for rest, joy, and growth. Enjoy and recharge! & Term 2 Early Close reminders

Good afternoon, families,

I would like to focus on Holidays.

Holidays at BSM should be cherished by our Senior School students. They are not simply a break between terms, but a vital part of a student’s learning, well-being, and long-term development. In a high-performing school community, it can be tempting to view holidays as time that must be filled or optimised.

Rest and recovery are essential. School life is busy and demanding, balancing academic challenge, co-curricular commitments, friendships, and assessments. Proper rest allows the brain and body to reset, supporting improved focus, emotional regulation, and resilience. Students who rest well return to school more ready to engage, learn, and contribute positively to the community.

Holidays also create space for joy and curiosity. Without timetables and deadlines, students can read for pleasure, pursue creative interests, cook, build, explore, or simply spend time with family and friends. These experiences remind students that learning is not only about outcomes, but about meaning, enjoyment, and connection.

Connection with nature is a particularly powerful part of the holiday experience. Time outdoors—whether by the sea, in the mountains, in green spaces, or simply being outside more often—supports both physical and emotional well-being. Nature encourages movement, reflection, and calm. It offers perspective, reduces stress, and helps students feel grounded in a way that structured environments often cannot.

It is important to be clear that holidays do not need to be filled with additional tutoring. In most cases, extra tuition during breaks is unnecessary and can undermine the benefits of rest and balance. Students at BSM are already well supported and challenged, and where targeted academic support is genuinely needed, the school will communicate this clearly.

We also ask all parents to give their children permission to simply be children. Unstructured time, play, boredom, laughter, and freedom are not wasted; they are developmentally important. Have fun!

Kind regards,

Mark Attwood
