Speech Day is one of the highlights of our BSM calendar. It is an event that celebrates our students' academic attainment and their development as learners, as well as their outstanding contributions to the wider life of the school and the wider community. The breadth of awards on offer reflects our vision and mission and is a testament to our commitment to offering a holistic education.
Speech Day this year is for students and parents in Years 6-12 and will take place this year on Saturday, 06 June.
We will be presenting our Awards to Year 13 during our Class of 2026 Graduation Ceremony on Saturday, 30 May. Year 13 students and parents are, of course, very welcome to join us as guests for Speech Day this year to celebrate the achievements of our wider community.
We would be delighted if as many of you as possible could join us.
The awards are highly valued by our students, and we have developed a methodology over many years that ensures consistency and fairness. The awards on offer, and the criteria and methods we use to decide upon the recipients, are outlined below.
Speech Day Prizes 2026 Criteria
Subject Awards
Subject Awards for Achievement
Heads of Department and teachers are provided with a summary of the SSA attainment grades for SSA1 and SSA2; these are converted into numbers so that we can average and rank the students’ performance. It is the highest year average that will determine the winner of the subject award in most cases. In the event of a tie based on the data, Departments use their collective professional judgement to nominate an award winner.
Approaches to Learning Subject Award
Our Approaches to Learning awards indicate the extent to which our students are developing exemplary learner attributes. The judgements in our SSA reports assess each student's levels of engagement, ability to act on feedback, ability to work collaboratively and their capacity for growth and resilience.
The awards in each subject for SSA1 and SSA2 have been converted to numbers and into a mean score. The award is given to the student who has achieved the highest mean score.
In the event of a tie based on the data, Departments use their collective professional judgement to nominate an award winner.
Overall Achievement Awards (Bronze, Silver and Gold)
The individual subject levels and grades are converted into numbers, and an average for all subjects is calculated and ranked. In the event of a tie, the students will share the award.
Global Citizen Awards 2026
Contribution to the Wider Life of the School and Community Building
These awards recognise students who have been active citizens and who have made outstanding contributions to our community in positions of responsibility or in our co-curricular programmes. The students will be realising their potential, thriving when challenged, responding positively to adversity and acting with integrity. The award winners will be individuals who inspire others to participate and lead by example. This may be in, but not limited to, one or more of the following areas: Music, Arts, Drama, sports teams, and events, house activities, residentials or Activities Week, MUN or through active participation in Whole School events.
Service Learning and Sustainability
These awards acknowledge students who demonstrate a sustained commitment to caring for others and our environment, they model compassion and empathy and act on these values through Service Learning and Sustainability initiatives. The recipients will have demonstrated the vision to initiate work with service partners or to ensure our work with existing partners is strong and sustainable. They will have encouraged others to become engaged in Service Learning and Sustainability initiatives. Their involvement may involve connecting and building collaborative partnerships with communities, fundraising in new and imaginative ways and promoting sustainable development. The outcomes of their work will make their world more peaceful, sustainable, and fair.
Performing Arts Awards (Music and Drama Colours)
Colour Awards are limited to a maximum of 10 recipients in each of the following categories: Year 6, Key Stage 3, and Key Stage 4–5 (combined)
To attain Drama Colours, students must:
- Demonstrate excellence in their area of contribution (performer or technical/crew) by showing a high level of skill, a willingness to develop and refine their craft and consistent preparation.
- Set an outstanding example to others through commitment, communication, collaboration and creativity.
- In Senior school, contribute to more than one BSM Drama event across the academic year.
To attain Music Colours, students must:
- Demonstrate excellence in their musical field (vocal, instrumental, or technology) through a high level of skill, consistent preparation, and a commitment to developing their musicianship.
- Set an outstanding example to others through commitment, reliability, collaboration, and positive contribution in rehearsals and performances.
- Make a significant contribution to BSM Music through sustained involvement in performances and representation of the department within and beyond BSM.
Qualifying Criteria
In order to be eligible to receive an award, a student must have an attendance percentage of above 90% in the period from Wednesday, 13 August 2025, to Friday, 27 March 2026.
