Inspiring insights for our Senior School students on how to thrive as they navigate their university/college pathways

Dear Families,

We were delighted to welcome representatives from the University of Cambridge and Imperial College London to our campus on Monday, in what was a genuinely inspiring and affirming visit for our students, families, and staff alike. Hosting two of the world’s most prestigious universities provided a valuable opportunity not only to deepen understanding of their admissions processes, but also to reflect on the calibre, ambition, and preparedness of our own students.

Both university representatives spoke candidly and thoughtfully about what it means to thrive in highly academic, research-driven environments such as Cambridge and Imperial. Their messages went well beyond grades alone. While academic excellence is, of course, essential, they emphasised curiosity, intellectual independence, resilience, and a genuine love of learning as defining characteristics of students who flourish in these settings. It was particularly heartening to hear them note that many of the questions posed by our students demonstrated precisely these qualities — thoughtful, reflective, and rooted in authentic academic interest rather than performative ambition.

Importantly, the visits helped demystify the idea of “fit”. Cambridge and Imperial were clear that these environments are not universally right for every student, and that success comes from alignment between a student’s learning style, motivations, and aspirations, and the nature of the institution itself. This is a message we strongly echo as a school. The most successful university journeys are those that are carefully considered, deeply personal, and grounded in self-knowledge rather than prestige alone.

A particularly powerful and reassuring theme to emerge from both visits was the universities’ unequivocal endorsement of working closely with school-based College Counsellors. Both institutions explicitly advised families to rely on their school’s College Counselling team, rather than spending significant sums on external consultants who do not have established relationships with the universities and, crucially, do not know the students as individuals. Cambridge and Imperial were clear that they value the insight, integrity, and long-term perspective that school counsellors bring—professionals who understand a student’s academic journey, personal context, and development over time.

This affirmation reflects the strength of our own college counselling provision. Our college counsellors work in close partnership with students and families over several years, supporting informed decision-making, realistic aspirations, and well-being throughout the process. Their guidance is rooted in deep knowledge of each student, up-to-date understanding of global admissions landscapes, and trusted relationships with universities worldwide.

The visits from Cambridge and Imperial were both validating and energising. They reinforced our confidence that our students are well prepared to compete—and, more importantly, to thrive—in the most demanding academic environments, when those environments are the right fit. They also affirmed the importance of thoughtful, relationship-based guidance in helping young people navigate complex choices with clarity and confidence.

We are grateful to both universities for their time, openness, and encouragement, and we look forward to continuing to support our students as they explore ambitious pathways that genuinely suit who they are and who they are becoming.

Kind regards,

Mark Attwood
