Head of School Welcomes the Community to Term 2

Head of School Welcomes the Community to Term 2
The British School Manila

Dear BSM Family,

I trust you have returned rejuvenated to Term 2 which promises to be another exciting and productive term. Spare a thought (and best of luck) to our Year 11 and Year 13 students writing their mock exams.

Today we celebrated our annual Founders’ Day at our Founders’ Day Assembly.

It was wonderful to welcome 20-plus BSM Alumni to our assembly, celebrating our 48th year since the founding of our vibrant British School Manila community.

In this deeply engaged and focussed learning community, we absolutely embrace our purpose and steadfastly commit to providing an outstanding holistic British International Education.

As you know, BSM extends beyond the realm of the three Rs, reading, ’riting and ‘rithmatic. We are a melting pot of cultures, ideas, and aspirations. In our diversity, we represent a microcosm of the world, where each student is a beacon of potential, representing a positive outlook of success.

Our students are empowered to flourish.

BSM students are positive global citizens with the skills, understanding, and values, to make a significant contribution to our world. As we have seen time and again within and outside our school walls, our students and our alumni make a significant difference.

I am constantly impressed by the keen young minds in our midst. Our students think critically, they question, and they seek to understand and impact the world beyond the classroom. The outcomes we witness as a product of our dedication to world-class education goes hand-in-hand too with our collaborative dedication to instilling values beyond the classroom.

Kindness. Integrity. Respect.

As we traverse the landscapes of teaching and learning, well-being, and global citizenship, we remain committed to our students’ futures as world leaders in thoughts and action, developing in them the knowledge and academic prowess as well as the emotional intelligence and resilience needed to navigate the complexities of our interconnected world.

However, while it is our students celebrated through these words it is our founders, their successors and those who carry the BSM vision whom we honour on Founders’ Day today for their foresight and conviction in dreaming and building a school with a shared belief in empowering our students as ambassadors of change and architects of the future.

BSM Founder’s Day Assembly provides an opportunity to celebrate the three key elements of our wonderful school - past, present, and future.

Firstly, acknowledging and thanking those who made it all possible through their vision. To our School Founders, and those who continue their work to a compelling vision - Trustees, Governors, all BSM staff, and our families.

Secondly, we celebrate our alumni and their successes.

The accomplishments of our alumni bear witness to their hard work and remarkable efforts, enabled through the substantial contributions from their alma mater and of course, the unwavering support of their families.

Thirdly, today provides the opportunity to link our BSM past, present and future through our Senior School Student Leadership Team (SSLT) valediction. This is the symbolic passing of the roles and responsibilities of student leadership from one year to the next.

We do this through the “passing of the baton,” senior student leaders handing over their leadership role of supporting their fellow students, pursuing service ideals and upholding our BSM purpose and values.

Together these three elements which we celebrate today, provide the symbolism and connections through generations to remind us to be grateful for what has been gifted to us in the establishment of BSM in 1976, almost 48 years ago, by our founders and built upon in the committed generations which followed.

At BSM, we continue to set the international educational standard others would like to emulate. We lead the way in so many areas of international education and are acknowledged accordingly at many levels, such as at the FOBISIA conference in November and in the wholly positive CIS/WASC and IB accreditation and review reports recently received.

On the ground, what makes this achievable in upholding the dreams of our Founders is a world-class team of educational practitioners, our teachers. We also have dedicated support personnel, a supportive and collaborative community and a committed board of governors.

To our original founders and everyone who actively strives to uphold our purpose and vision for our students to flourish. Thank you.

Enjoy a family-filled weekend.
