Happy Valentine's Day, BSM đź’™

Dear BSM Family,

As we celebrate Valentine’s Day today, we may be reminded of the legends of St Valentine. If you didn’t know the origins of what some cynics may see as just another commercial opportunity, it is in fact based on various legends of St Valentine, a figure associated with acts of kindness, courage, and selflessness. One popular historical narrative tells of Valentine as a priest who secretly married couples in defiance of unjust laws, believing in love, compassion, and the right to be together.

In another version of the legend during the time of Emperor Claudius II, Valentine was known for his acts of healing and miracles. He was said to have restored sight to a jailer’s blind daughter, who he fell in love with. However, he was to be executed and before his execution, he sent her a note and signed it “Your Valentine.”

At the heart of these legends is the spirit of respect, integrity, and kindness, values that guide our BSM community. Whether through small gestures of appreciation, standing up for what is right, or treating one another with empathy and care, we see these principles in action throughout our school.

Today on Valentine’s Day, let’s take a moment to celebrate not just love in its many forms, but also the values that unite us as a special community. A kind word, a thoughtful act, or simply showing gratitude can make all the difference. Wishing you all a wonderful Valentine’s Day filled with warmth and appreciation for one another.

Parent Workshops

'Mind Your Language - An Overview of English Language in the Senior School Curriculum', Wednesday, 19 February, 08.00am, LRC Level 2, Screen Space

English lessons in Senior School include much more than reading novels, plays, and poetry. We invite Year 7-13 parents to learn about the 'other stuff' in the English curriculum. Mr Graham will talk about the skills we teach our students during English lessons. He’ll also showcase some student projects and creative tasks from all Key Stages. Parents will have the opportunity to find out about the distinction between the English language and literature, ask questions and even participate in some English language activities themselves. Sign up here.

'Safety, Belonging, & Identity Affirmation in Student Learning & Well-Being', Wednesday, 05 March, 08.00am-09.30am, LRC Level 2, Screen Space

A parent session led by Joel Jr Llaban, Director of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice (DEIJ) at International Schools Services aimed to deepen our understanding of how culture shapes children’s identities, learning, and behaviour. In this session, we will reflect on how the brain relies on safety, belonging, and identity affirmation to foster learning and enhance well-being. Through this session, families will gain insights into creating supportive environments that empower children’s growth and success in school and beyond. Sign up here.
