Perspective matters in measuring success

Perspective matters in measuring success

Dear BSM Family,

Our half-term break is upon us after what seems like a whole school term. It has been. From the start of this school year, I started a new practice. At the end of each day, whenever I have a chance to chat with students, I ask a simple question: “What’s one thing you enjoyed today?”

The answers I get are as varied as they are uplifting, from “playing football with my friends” to "my music lesson” or “learning something new.” What strikes me most is how quickly students recall moments of joy, connection, and learning. Their reflections often reveal the small, powerful successes that can go unnoticed in the busyness of school life and have reminded me that perspective matters. When I listen to students talk about what brings them joy, I see BSM through their eyes, a vibrant place full of curiosity, belonging, and opportunity. It’s a reminder that success often lives in these small moments, woven through our community every single day.

As we move through the school year, it’s worth pausing to ask ourselves, “What’s been our biggest success story so far?” as much as it’s important to ask, “What’s been our biggest challenge so far?” In each case, we can gain insight into what helps us grow, adapt, and improve. Celebrating success doesn’t mean ignoring difficulty; it means noticing the balance, the progress, and the positive energy already at play.

In our BSM community, our shared purpose keeps us moving forward, and at the half-term break, we can pause to celebrate and reflect as much as look ahead to the wonderful events and opportunities that the second half of Term 1 holds. Just one example is The annual Fun Run on Sunday, 26 October, which is more than a “run” with stalls, activities and more; it is a family-filled morning for all. Guy Fawkes Night in November is a fabulous tradition not to be missed. More details will come through soon.

In the meantime, wishing everyone a restful break and safe travels to those who will be on the move.

Warm regards,

Martin van der Linde
