BSM fostering a family atmosphere

“BSM will foster a friendly, family atmosphere that nurtures partnerships for learning and a sense of community”

- Extract from BSM Vision and Mission

Mabuhay! A huge welcome to the BSM learning community, to new families who have just joined the British School Manila and huge welcome back to our returning families.

The Philippines is a wonderfully warm (in both senses of the word) and welcoming country. Communities are like families in which people look after each other, and our first assembly of the new school year mirrored the hearty Pinoy welcome to our BSM family. We finished with all the primary teachers singing the classic Sister Sledge song We are Family, replacing the line “I’ve got all my sisters with me” with “I’ve got all of BSM with me.”

In the second week of this term, we looked at what it means to be part of a community, what responsibilities you have and what rights you have, with the powerful underlying message that we look after each other.

BSM is not a large school in student numbers, but it is large in heart. Our community (and that is a key word we have carried with us from Merville days) and our partnerships are our strengths and we want everyone to feel very much a part of that and that we are on the same learning journey together.

Children are challenged by their learning at BSM but motivated because tasks are authentic and fun. We emphasise on collaboration, with children working together to solve problems and our students are expected to drive their own learning. Our first whole school assembly in the first week was a celebration of getting back together as a school to continue those fabulous learning adventures again.

Before school started we did what we do all the time at BSM, talking about learning. Our pedagogy is backed by research and our teachers are fully conversant with best classroom practice. One lens through which we have viewed learning over the past year is that of global citizenship; our students will continue on that journey this year.
