Directgov

The Directgov website is an attempt to rationalise the myriad of Government websites. The aim, eventually, is to source all Government websites through this window including those of the DfES and its associated Non Departmental Public Bodies (NDPBs). While this programme is a long way off from completion, it already provides extensive access to a number of education issues.

Every Child Matters

For children and young people in England the DfES is focused on two agendas. These are every child matters (ECM) and standards.These are not disconnected agendas but the ECM agenda has five specific aims.
These are:

    * be healthy
    * stay safe
    * enjoy and achieve (linked to standards)
    * make a positive contribution
    * achieve economic well-being (linked to standards)

This strategy is a cross-departmental strategy but the key site is a DfES website since children’s centres and then schools are seen as holding the key. The extended schools agenda – see the Teachernet and TDA websites – set out this agenda.

Governors Gateway

UK schools are run by governing bodies who provide strategic direction, monitoring and evaluation and operate as ‘critical friends’ to the headteacher. Each school has a governing body consisting of key stakeholders – parents, staff, local authority or foundation and community. Although this website is quite complex to use it does contain useful information on the law and the role of governing bodies.

The Parents/Carers website is an extensive website containing a full range of information for parents/carers provided by the government. http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Parents/

Standards Site

The Standards Site provides access to a range of pages that explain what is happening in English schools. To access particular areas use the search site in the top right hand corner entitled ‘Pick an Area’. This lists the key pages held on this site.

Teachernet

The Teachernet website is designed for schools. It has something for everyone who works in a school. While much of the information may not be relevant for schools outside the UK, or more specifically England, there are useful teaching and learning resources, available to download for free, on the site. For anyone wishing to understand more about the English education system this site is a good place to start. There is a useful A to Z leadership and management section within the Management section on the site. DfES publications are also available to download on this site.

Young People

The Government’s is similar to the parents/carers website in that it contains an extensive access to all issues on Government websites related to young people.

Welsh Assembly

Although education is devolved to the Welsh Assembly for management, the education in Wales is similar to England.

Non Departmental Public Bodies (NDPBs):
Each Government department in England has a number of NDPBs designed to carry out aspects of departmental policy and advise the department. The main ones attached to the DfES and associated with schools are:

British Educational Communications and Technology Agency (Becta)
cta leads the national drive to improve learning through technology. It does this by working with industry to ensure it has the right technology for education in place. It also supports the education sector to make the best use of technology so that every learner in the UK is able to benefit from its advantages and achieves the best (s)he can.

Learning and Skills Council (LSC)The LSC is responsible for planning and funding high quality education and training for everyone in England other than those in universities or under 16. It funds post 16 education in schools and further education colleges. It also helps fund many forms of adult education.

National College for School Leadership (NCSL)The National College for School Leadership (NCSL) exists to help to make a difference to the lives and the life chances of children and young people through the development of world-class school leaders.

The Office for Standards in Education, Children's Services and Skills (Ofsted)

The Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA)

QCA maintains and develops the national curriculum and associated assessments, tests and examinations; and accredits and monitors qualifications in colleges and at work. The National Curriculum affects students in schools from ages 5 to 16 as well as those in Early Years education – the Foundation Stage (Ages 3 to 5). It is also responsible for A Levels and the new post 16 diplomas. The QCA includes the National Assessment Agency (NAA).

Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA)

The TDA works with schools, universities and other providers to develop the workforce and ensure that schools can recruit good-quality, well-trained people. The TDA also supports local authorities (school districts) and schools to provide extended services for parents, children and young people. Its work covers the recruitment and training of teachers (Initial Teacher Training), the development of teachers (Continuing Professional Development), the development of support staff, who now make up 40% of the school workforce in England, and workforce modernisation (formerly remodelling).
