Primary Information and Communication Technology
Subject philosophy
Technology now plays a central part in education, providing us with an increasingly rich and varied range of opportunities for learning. In the primary school at The British School Manila, we aim for children to become competent, confident, responsible and critical users of ICT by making effective and creative use of technology. We aim for them to put these skills to use in a wide variety of ways across the primary curriculum.
Curriculum overview
Theme Unit of work Exchanging and sharing information Multimedia: Combine text, graphics and sound Digital Imagery: Art/paint packages, digital imagery, animation and video Sound and Music: Recording and creating music and sound Electronic Communication: Email and learning platforms Finding things out Research, using electronic media and the internet Data Handling, pictograms, databases and graphing packages Developing ideas and making things happen Modelling and simulations Control and monitoring

Following the three themes of the National Curriculum, ICT is organised into 8 units of work. Each of these 8 units are studied in each year, from Year 1 through to Year 6. By the end of primary, many children will be working at or towards level 5 in ICT. Children are assessed throughout the year so that appropriate lessons and activities can be provided.
Time allocation
The ICT curriculum, covered by at least two weekly ICT lessons of up to an hour each, allows children to learn and develop specific skills in computing and technology. These skills are then put to use and extended in many different lessons across the curriculum.
Cross-curricular links
Our school puts particular emphasis on the practical, cross-curricular use of ICT as a learning tool so that children engage in a wide variety of creative and challenging projects, like composing and recording music, creating digital art, video-editing, creating websites, collaborating through email, robotics and animation.
Resources
The primary school at The British School Manila is excellently resourced with ICT equipment. We have interactive whiteboards in every classroom, 4 computer suites for whole-class lessons and computers available in shared-areas in each year group. Children have access to a range of peripherals including control toys, robotics kits, digital cameras, projectors, visualisers, data-loggers, colour scanners and printers, video cameras, audio recorders and webcams. We use a wide variety of educational software in lessons and, in Key Stage 2, children use class websites and their school email for home-learning.
As technology continues to advance, The British School Manila is committed to using the best of this to help children learn, develop and enjoy themselves in the primary school.
