Primary Mathematics

Subject philosophy

At The British School Manila we recognise that Mathematics is a key life skill and therefore a powerful and useful tool in developing an understanding of the world in which we live.  The understanding and application of mathematical skills are important  life acquisitions.  In our teaching we understand the importance of our children developing the necessary skills to explore questions and understand pattern and have the ability to use maths purposefully in real life situations.  We aim to develop a sense of pleasure and enjoyment through mathematical activity.

Curriculum overview

Mathematics is a core subject of the National Curriculum of England and teachers follow the Primary Framework for Mathematics which provides a solid structure for long and medium term planning.  This is organised into five blocks with each topic area covered in each year group.  These blocks are:

  • Block A: Counting, partitioning and calculating,
  • Block B: Securing number facts, understanding shape,
  • Block C: Handling data and measures,
  • Block D: Calculating, measuring and understanding shape,
  • Block E: Securing number facts, relationships and calculating.

Mathematics is taught for up to one hour per day with the children focusing on using and applying Mathematics, counting and understanding number, knowing and using number facts, calculating, understanding shape, measuring and data handling; we pay particular emphasis on the children’s ability to use and apply Mathematics to everyday life.

Lesson organisation and planning

Lessons are structured around a three-part lesson: mental/oral starter; main activity; plenary.  At the forefront of our lessons is the understanding that children learn most effectively when they are excited and engaged.  Teachers are encouraged to exploit opportunities to link Mathematics to other curriculum subjects to stimulate this further.

Teachers remain up to date with both curriculum initiatives and interactive resources in order to create a stimulating environment in which the students can learn.  We aim to deliver activities that allow the children to apply and use their mathematical skills in a context that is relevant to them.  Through an investigative approach children are encouraged to explore their own ideas whilst at the same time being able to explain their processes, understanding and mathematical reasoning.

Assessment

At BSM we build upon the fundamental knowledge learnt in the previous Key Stages.  We ensure progression is made at the student’s individual pace.  In Mathematics the children are assessed regularly through short, medium and long term assessment methods.  Assessment for Learning methods are employed on a daily basis to support children’s development and progress, in particular identifying misunderstandings or gaps in learning.  Information is given to the child on how they have made progress and insight on how they can make further improvements.

In Years 3, 4 and 5, we use UK set tests at the end of the year produced by the Qualifications Curriculum Authority.  In Years 2 and 6 students sit National Curriculum Test for Mathematics.  Throughout the year the children will be regularly assessed on their understanding of key objectives that need to be covered in each age group.

Use of ICT

At BSM we view technology as an integral part of the children’s mathematical experience and as an example the children use computers for data handling and geometry packages and regularly use calculators.  Our interactive whiteboards are also a very important learning and teaching tool with a wide range of web based resources being used to support teaching.
