The Republic of the Philippines is a part of South East Asia. It consists of more than 7,000 islands, divided into three groups – Luzon, the Visayas and Mindanao. The capital, Manila, is located in Luzon. The country has been independent since 1946 and its most recent colonisers were the USA so there is a strong American influence

In land area the Philippines is slightly larger than the United Kingdom. It is a land of sharp contrasts with coastal plains and extensive valleys, alternated with plateaus and mountain ranges. Elevation ranges from sea level to 3000 metres
